Like many businesses, we’re continually looking at ways to reduce our impact and operate more sustainably. While there’s always more work to do, we’ve taken meaningful steps across our business to minimise waste, reduce energy consumption, and support a more circular approach to flooring.

One of The Flooring Room's biggest sustainability investments has been the installation of solar panels at our Tauranga showroom and offices.
After reviewing our environmental impact, we identified energy consumption as an area where we could make a real difference. Solar was a natural next step after transitioning part of our vehicle fleet to electric vehicles and implementing a range of waste reduction initiatives.
Today, our solar system generates more than half of the electricity used across our showroom, offices, and EV charging, helping reduce our reliance on the grid while lowering operating costs. As owner Steve Ferris explains, the most rewarding part isn’t just the savings.
“The thing that surprised me the most was the feel-good factor when you know the sun is largely running your power and fuelling your vehicles.”
The investment reflects our long-term approach to business. Making decisions that benefit future generations while continuing to deliver quality flooring solutions for customers today.
Our Sustainability Initiatives
ReNew Eco UnderlayWe exclusively use Sleepyhead’s ReNew Eco Underlay, manufactured using recycled materials and designed to reduce landfill waste while maintaining exceptional performance.
Recycling UnderlayAll uplifted underlay and underlay offcuts are collected and recycled wherever possible, helping divert significant volumes of material from landfill.
Flooring Recycling & RepurposingWhere recycling or repurposing options exist in New Zealand, we work to ensure recovered flooring materials are given a second life. This includes products such as carpet tiles and selected uplifted flooring.
Electric VehiclesWe’re progressively transitioning our vehicle fleet to electric vehicles, reducing emissions while supporting cleaner transport options.
Packaging RecoverySoft plastic packaging from manufacturers is recycled or returned for reuse wherever possible. We also recycle cardboard cores and packaging materials generated through our operations.
Energy Efficient OperationsOur lighting has been upgraded to energy-efficient alternatives, reducing power consumption across our premises.
